Surround Sound - 5.1 vs 7.1

Surround Sound is a technology that's been improving in very subtle ways over the years and for almost a decade 5.1 surround sound has been the standard for any technologically advanced living room. Now, however, there is another option: 7.1 surround sound. A lot of enthusiasts are taking the $500+ plunge into 7.1 surround sound, but is that really necessary? Could it possibly be that much better than your 5.1 surround sound setup?

Well, while it 7.1 surround sound has its advantages 5.1 surround sound shouldn't be considered a thing of the past just yet. The truth is, the only major difference is that instead of putting the left/right and rear all on the same channel they split it up. Instead of 2 channels you now can have 4. The difference is all a matter of what your ears can perceive. And the benefits are all a matter of what your ears prefer. 5.1 surround sound is a perfectly acceptable solution. If you don't have 7.1 surround sound yet the only thing you're missing is that lovely $500 hole in your wallet.
